(Clayton Samuel King)
About the Artist
Clayton Samuel King has been working in the creative arts for the past sixteen years. Clayton has developed predominantly as a painter but also works with several other mediums. Mr. King has displayed his art his work in 8 solo exhibitions and 44 selected group exhibitions. His artwork has been acquired by many public and private collectors all over Turtle Island and beyond.
The common themes in Mr. King’s work are inspired by Anishinaabek culture, heritage, and history. When Clayton was a youth, he became influenced by the work of several woodland artists. Like many Indigenous artists today, Clayton carries on the tradition of storytelling, cultural practices, and beliefs through his work.
Since the beginning of 2022, Clayton has completed two major paintings for Accenture Business Services for Utilities Inc. in St. Catharines, ON for their new Gord Downie/Chanie Wenjack Legacy Space. His work was featured with other artists at the Varley Art Gallery in an exhibition titled Lanterns of Indigenous Lights in celebration of LunarFest. His work was made available in ANDPVA’s Indigenous Art Market in Leslieville/Toronto. Mr. King also produced new paintings for his 8th solo exhibition at the Midland Cultural Centre’s Gallery of Indigenous Art titled Gaagige-Bimaadiziwin, meaning Everlasting Life. This exhibit was on display from July 11th – October 1st. During the end of the summer, Clayton was commissioned by the 3rd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group to create a painting on their new teepee in celebration of the 3rd Ranger's 75th Anniversary last fall. Mr. King was commissioned by Dalton Associates to create four large paintings for their Gord Downie/Chanie Wenjack Legacy Space. To top it all off, Clayton was also named 13U Head Coach of the Year by the Barrie Minor Baseball Association.
Clayton was born and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario, and graduated with a Fine Art Advanced Diploma from Fanshawe College in 2010. Throughout his career, Clayton has volunteered on several boards and committees ranging from local to national levels. Clayton has also been the recipient of 11 awards, 7 grants, and 11 major commissions. Clayton Samuel King is of Potawatomi Anishinabek descent and is a member of the Beausoleil First Nation.
